Jewelry Resizing Guide

A ring that does not fit will sit in a drawer. Here is what a factory says about resizing before and after you buy.

What can be resized

Plain gold and silver bands, most solitaire rings and simple pendants can be resized up or down one or two sizes. The jeweler cuts the band, adds or removes metal, and re-polishes. Ask about resizing your piece.

What to avoid

A full eternity band with stones all around cannot be sized without removing and resetting stones — size these correctly the first time. Platinum resizing is also costlier than gold.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many sizes can a ring go up?

More than two sizes up starts to distort the ring — better to remake the shank.

Does resizing weaken the ring?

Done well, no; a poor resize can distort prongs, so use a jeweler, not a kiosk.

Should I size before gifting?

Borrow a ring she wears and measure it — sizing after purchase is cheap and easy.
