How to Clean Gold Jewelry – The Safe Home Method

Gold stays beautiful for decades if cleaned the right way. Learn the simple home method our jewelers use, what to avoid, and when to bring a piece back to the workshop.

The Safe Home Cleaning Method

For most 14k and 18k gold jewelry, the safest cleaning routine is warm water, a few drops of mild dish soap, and a soft baby toothbrush. Soak the piece for a few minutes, brush gently around prongs and crevices, rinse under warm running water, and pat dry with a lint-free cloth.

Do this every two to four weeks for pieces worn daily. It removes the body oils, lotion and dust that make gold look dull, and it costs almost nothing.

What to Avoid on Gold Jewelry

Avoid harsh chemicals such as chlorine, bleach and ammonia. Chlorine can actually break down gold alloys, and even a short swim in a pool can weaken prongs. Ultrasonic cleaners are fine for plain gold, but do not use them on pieces with soft gemstones such as pearls, opals or emeralds, and never on plated or gold filled jewelry.

Avoid abrasive polishing cloths that claim to be universal, they can scratch the surface of softer gold alloys. Use a dedicated jewelry cloth instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use toothpaste to clean gold?

No. Toothpaste is abrasive and can scratch gold, especially 14k which is softer. Use mild dish soap and warm water instead.

Does gold tarnish?

Pure gold does not, but 14k and 18k contain alloy metals that can dull over time. Cleaning restores the shine quickly.

How often should I clean my gold ring?

Every 2-4 weeks for daily wear. If you notice buildup under the stone, bring it in, trapped dirt can loosen prongs.
