Gold Plated vs Gold Filled vs Vermeil Explained

Gold plated, gold filled and vermeil look similar but differ hugely in gold content, durability and price. Learn which one is right for your budget and how long each type lasts.

Three Types of Gold Layering

Gold plated jewelry has a thin layer of gold (usually 0.5-2 microns) electroplated over base metal. Vermeil is gold plating over sterling silver with a thicker layer of at least 2.5 microns. Gold filled has a thick layer of 14K gold mechanically bonded to a core, containing 5% gold by weight and lasting far longer.

Durability and Lifespan

Gold plated pieces can fade within months to a year with daily wear. Vermeil lasts longer, typically 1-3 years before re-plating, and is safe for most sensitive skins because the base is silver. Gold filled pieces can last 5-10 years or more, making them the best value for everyday fashion jewelry.

Which Should You Choose?

For a special piece you will keep for years, choose solid gold or gold filled. For trendy fashion jewelry you wear occasionally, gold plated or vermeil is fine. Always check the plating thickness and base metal before buying, and avoid pieces advertised only as "gold tone" or "gold colored", which contain no real gold.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is vermeil better than gold plated?

Yes. Vermeil uses a sterling silver base and a thicker gold layer, so it is more durable and much less likely to cause skin irritation than gold plating over base metal.

How long does gold filled jewelry last?

Gold filled jewelry typically lasts 5-10 years of daily wear because the gold layer is mechanically bonded and much thicker. With gentle care it can last even longer before the layer wears through.

Can you manufacture gold plated and gold filled pieces for our brand?

Yes, we offer OEM jewelry in gold plated, vermeil, gold filled and solid gold with custom logos and quality control. Share your design on WhatsApp for a factory quote.
