Gold Filled vs Gold Plated – What Is the Difference?

Gold filled and gold plated sound similar but wear very differently. Learn how each is made, how long they last, and which one makes sense for everyday fine jewelry.

How Gold Filled Jewelry Is Made

Gold filled jewelry is created by heat-bonding a thick layer of 14k or 18k gold onto a base metal core such as brass or jeweler's brass. The gold layer must be at least 1/20 of the item's total weight to be legally called gold filled in most markets. This is not a surface dip, it is a permanent mechanical bond that can survive years of daily wear.

At our factory in Panyu, Guangzhou, we use gold filled stock mainly for fashion-forward lines where customers want the look and safety of real gold at a friendlier price. The layer is thick enough that it does not flake off the way plated jewelry often does.

How Gold Plated Jewelry Is Made

Gold plated jewelry is a base metal (often copper or brass) that receives a very thin layer of gold through electroplating. The plating is usually measured in microns, commonly 0.5 to 3 microns. That layer can wear through quickly with water, sweat, perfume and friction, exposing the base metal underneath.

Plated pieces can look beautiful for months, but they are generally considered disposable or short-term jewelry. The gold layer is measured in microns, not in the 1/20 weight ratio that gold filled requires.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is gold filled better than gold plated?

Yes for durability. Gold filled has a bonded 14k layer at least 1/20 of total weight, so it lasts years, while plated pieces only carry microns of gold.

Can you shower with gold filled jewelry?

Gold filled is water resistant for daily wear, but chlorine and salt water can still dull the surface over time, so remove it before swimming.

Does gold plated jewelry turn green?

It can. Once the thin plating wears through, the copper or brass base reacts with sweat and turns skin green. Gold filled rarely does this.
