Gemstone Hardness and the Mohs Scale Explained
Not all gemstones are equal when it comes to scratch resistance. The Mohs scale ranks minerals from 1 to 10 and tells you which stones are safe for daily rings and which need protective settings.
Not all gemstones are equal when it comes to scratch resistance. The Mohs scale ranks minerals from 1 to 10 and tells you which stones are safe for daily rings and which need protective settings.
The Mohs scale measures how easily one mineral scratches another. Diamond ranks 10, corundum (ruby and sapphire) ranks 9, and stones below 7 are soft enough to be scratched by everyday dust, which contains quartz. This makes 7 a practical threshold for stones worn in engagement and wedding rings.
Diamond, moissanite and sapphire rank 9-10 and are excellent for daily wear. Topaz, garnet, amethyst, citrine and tourmaline rank 7-8 and are safe with care. Pearls, opals, turquoise and emeralds rank well below 7 and require protective settings, gentle cleaning and removal before activities.
| Gemstone | Mohs Hardness | Daily Wear | Care Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diamond | 10 | Excellent | Avoid hard knocks |
| Moissanite | 9.25 | Excellent | Standard care |
| Ruby / Sapphire | 9 | Excellent | Standard care |
| Topaz / Garnet | 7-8 | Good | Avoid harsh chemicals |
| Amethyst / Citrine | 7 | Good | Store separately |
| Emerald | 7.5-8 | Careful | Oil treatment, gentle clean |
| Opal | 5.5-6.5 | Not daily | Keep away from water and heat |
| Pearl | 2.5-4.5 | Not daily | Wipe after wear, no ultrasonic |
For an engagement or wedding ring worn 24/7, choose a stone of 7.5 or higher. If you fall in love with a softer stone such as pearl or opal, use it in a pendant, earrings or a ring you wear occasionally, and ask for a bezel setting that protects the edges.

Emeralds are hard enough at 7.5-8 but are brittle and often oil-filled, so they chip more easily. A protective bezel or gallery setting and avoiding hard knocks make them safer, but many owners choose emeralds for occasional wear.
