Diamond Weight and Size Guide
Carat is weight, not size, and the same carat looks very different across shapes. This guide maps carat weight to real dimensions so you can choose a diamond that looks exactly as large as you want.
Carat is weight, not size, and the same carat looks very different across shapes. This guide maps carat weight to real dimensions so you can choose a diamond that looks exactly as large as you want.
One carat equals 0.2 grams. Two diamonds of one carat can look different sizes because shape and cut affect how the weight is distributed. A round diamond holds weight deep in its pavilion, while elongated shapes like oval, marquise and pear spread the same weight across a larger surface, making them appear bigger face-up.
When buyers say "looks like two carats," they are usually seeing an elongated or shallow-cut stone. This is why comparing actual dimensions in millimeters matters more than the carat number alone.
| Carat | Round (diameter) | Oval (L x W) | Emerald (L x W) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.50 ct | 5.2 mm | 6.5 x 4.4 mm | 5.5 x 3.9 mm |
| 0.75 ct | 5.9 mm | 7.4 x 5.0 mm | 6.3 x 4.4 mm |
| 1.00 ct | 6.5 mm | 8.1 x 5.5 mm | 7.0 x 4.9 mm |
| 1.50 ct | 7.4 mm | 9.3 x 6.3 mm | 8.0 x 5.6 mm |
On a size 6 finger, a 6.5 mm round (1 ct) covers about a third of the finger width. Petite fingers can carry 0.75-1 ct elegantly; larger hands often prefer 1.5-2 ct. To maximize visual size on a budget, choose an oval, pear or marquise, or add a thin halo that frames the stone.

Choose an elongated shape such as oval, pear or marquise, use a thin halo or pavé band, and avoid thick prongs that cover the stone. A well-cut shallow stone also spreads weight.
Most buyers choose 1-1.5 ct for a size 6 finger. Petite fingers may prefer 0.75-1 ct, while larger hands often carry 1.5-2 ct comfortably.
