Carat weight does not always predict how big a diamond looks. Learn how cut and shape affect face-up size, and how to choose a carat that suits your finger.
Two diamonds of the same carat can look different in size because of shape and cut. Elongated shapes like oval and marquise look larger for their weight, while deeper cuts look smaller. The face-up size in millimeters is a better guide than carat alone. Compare diamond shapes in our ring collection.
| Carat | Round diameter | Oval length | Finger look |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5 ct | 5.2 mm | 6.5 mm | Delicate |
| 1.0 ct | 6.5 mm | 8.0 mm | Classic |
| 1.5 ct | 7.4 mm | 9.0 mm | Statement |
| 2.0 ct | 8.2 mm | 10.0 mm | Bold |
On smaller fingers, a 1 carat looks bigger, while larger hands can carry 1.5 to 2 carats comfortably. Try rings on, or use a printed size chart, before deciding, because photos never show true scale. Ask us for size advice based on your hand.
