A well-cut diamond returns light from the table through the crown, creating brilliance (white flashes), fire (rainbow flashes) and scintillation (sparkle as the stone moves). A poorly cut diamond leaks light through the pavilion and looks dull, even if it has perfect color and clarity. Cut is the only C directly controlled by human skill.
GIA grades round brilliant diamonds from Excellent to Poor. Ideal and Excellent stones are cut to precise proportions and symmetry, maximizing light return. Very Good stones are slightly less precise but still bright. Good stones are eye-clean and acceptable for budget rings, while Fair and Poor stones should be avoided.
The table is the flat top, the crown is the upper section, and the pavilion is the lower section that acts like a mirror. If the pavilion is too shallow or too deep, light escapes and the stone looks glassy or dark. A well-proportioned stone has a table around 53-58% of the diameter for round brilliants.
