Diamond Color Grades

Diamond color is graded D (colorless) through Z (faint yellow). Here is where to stop spending.

How Color Works

D-F stones are truly colorless and carry a premium. G-I stones look white face-up to most people and offer the best value. Below J, a yellow tint becomes noticeable, especially in white gold or platinum settings. See our white gold rings.

Match Your Metal

Yellow gold masks color, so you can drop to J or K. White gold/platinum show color, so choose G or better.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does diamond color matter in yellow gold?

Less so — yellow gold masks the tint, so a lower grade looks white.

What color looks best in platinum?

G or better, because white metal makes any yellow tint obvious.

Is a D diamond worth it?

To the naked eye D and G look similar face-up; most buyers prefer saving the difference.
