Diamond Carat Weight Explained

Carat is the metric everyone fixates on, but it is not the same as the size you see. Here is how a factory reads it.

What one carat actually looks like

One carat is 0.2 grams. On a round brilliant it measures roughly 6.5mm across — smaller than most people expect. Because prices rise steeply at weight benchmarks, a 0.9ct can look almost identical to a 1ct while costing far less. View our rings.

CaratRound diameterRelative price
0.5ct5.2mm1x
0.9ct6.2mm~2.5x
1.0ct6.5mm~3.5x
2.0ct8.2mm~10x

Buy below the jump if budget matters

Smart buyers choose 0.9ct, 1.4ct or 1.9ct rather than round numbers, because the price jump at whole and half-carat marks is emotional, not optical.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does higher carat mean a bigger ring?

Not by itself — cut, shape and setting all change how large it appears on the finger.

Is a 1ct ring a good default?

Yes for most hands; on smaller fingers a 0.7-0.9ct often looks more proportional.

Can you increase the look of size?

A halo or slim pavé band makes the same center stone read larger.
